There were fields here,
There were delicious tomatoes here,
There was my grandma here,
There were the best football pitches here.

We’d hardly arrived in the village when everyone started stressing out.
My grandma was stressing out because I wanted to touch the sheep,
My father was stressing out because I wanted to ride motorbike with him.
My mother was stressing out because I wanted to change clothes,
So I could finally go to see my friends.
In the end, I sat there – stressed out.

I put on my red and blue kit, football boots and knee-high socks.
On the way to the children’s football pitch, my whole face was beaming.
I embraced the entire village and shouted
‘Can we finally play football now?!?’

I was ten years old the last time I played football in my village
I was ten years old the last time I wore red and blue kit
I was ten years old the last time I embraced my grandma
I was ten years old the last time I ate delicious tomatoes
I was ten years old when my childhood was taken from me

I was a child in a place where it would have been much simpler to be a child if you hadn’t taken the joy from me.
